Setting Up and Building a Screen Business

Screen Producers Australia in partnership with Screen Territory is presenting the national Business Essentials full day workshop in Darwin on Tuesday 5 September and Alice Springs on Thursday 7 September. Business Essentials is presented in association with AFTRS and covers the commercial framework in which producers must operate. The course is designed to provide you with the essential information to start, develop and grow a film and television business.

The Darwin Workshop will feature screen executive and multi-award winning producer, director and writer Julia Redwood, the co-founder of Prospero Productions. Meanwhile in Alice Springs, Screen Territory’s freshly appointed Director Sally Ingleton will share her vast experience in the Australian and International screen industry having produced and directed an award winning slate. Julia and Sally with share their experience and international insights for everyone that attends, in a special Q&A session with Owen Johnston.

Sally Ingleton is the new Director at Screen Territory and is based in Darwin. Prior to commencing 2 months ago she was the CEO of Melbourne based production company 360 Degree Films.

Sally has been an active member of the Australian and International screen industry for over 30 years, both producing and directing an award winning slate of over 40 hours of factual television for partners including ABC, SBS, National Geographic, BBC, PBS, ITV and Arte France.

Apart from creating her own projects Sally has worked as an Investment Manager at Film Victoria, Project Manager at AFTRS, Lecturer at Victorian College of the Arts and taught documentary screenwriting at RMIT. Sally has extensive experience as an industry assessor with screen agencies, as a Jury member for the Logies and AACTA's and as a selector at many international film festivals such as Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and BANFF TV Festival. She has extensive marketing experience across Asia, USA and Europe and has filmed in every continent.

Sally is no stranger to the Territory. She started her career in Darwin as an Artist In Residence at Sanderson High School and quickly began producing content for local TV and SBS, travelling to many communities. More recently Sally has coordinated some of the Realisator Workshops for Screen Territory.

Julia Redwood established Prospero Productions with Ed Punchard in Perth in 1991. Prospero has now become one of the leading independent documentary production companies in Australia. In addition to being joint managing director, Julia is a multi-award winning producer, director and writer. 

In 1998 her highly acclaimed directorial debut, Paying for the Piper, was nominated for two AFI awards, a Royal Television Society award and won the Golden Spire Award at the 2000 San Francisco Film Festival. 

Other highlights include, SAS: The Search for Warriors winner of the inaugural ACCTA Awards for Best Documentary, The Man Who Jumped nominated Best Documentary ACCTA Awards, Death of the Megabeasts nominated Best Visual Effects AFI Awards, Eco House Challenge winner Best Multi-Modal Production ATOM Awards, Australia - Life on the Edge nominated Most Outstanding Factual Program ASTRA Awards.

Julia has made over 255 hours of television across a broad spectrum of roles.  Today her role is largely that of an executive producer.  In her role she markets all Prospero’s new ideas, travelling regularly nationally and internationally.  Once the idea has been sold she helps pull the deals together.  Once in production she ensures the editorial quality of all the films.  She also is at the heart of the Development Department, developing new ideas and materials, ensuring they marry with the market needs.

Julia is currently a member of the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) and The Screenwest Board advisory Committee - this coupled with her extensive creative talents and many years of experience in the marketplace makes Julia one of the leading figures in the Australian film industry.

Owen Johnston has worked for Screen Producers Australia for over a decade in both policy and industrial relations. Owen has produced feature films, documentaries, television drama, and commercials and is a former Director of Film Development and Marketing at the Australian Film Commission.

Mark Donaldson is our Manager, Business & Legal Affairs. Mark provides legal and research support, and assists in the development of policy campaigns and the negotiation of industrial and commercial agreements.

Brad Taylor is our Membership and Licensing Manager and is responsible for managing membership and stakeholder relations. Brad is the primary contact for enquires regarding membership and levies.
