As of January 1st 2026, subscription video on demand (SVOD) or streaming services are required by law to invest in Australian content. This new legislation introduces for the first time a national framework requiring streaming platforms to contribute consistently and meaningfully to the creation of Australian screen stories.
SPA welcomes this significant milestone for our industry after over a decade of tireless advocacy, while acknowledging that this legislation alone will not address the decline in commissioning Australian screen stories.
